A SOURCE OF LIFE, DESIRE AND AMBITION – A STORY ABOUT THE ELEMENT OF WATER IN GARDEN ART
LECTURE IN POLISH
(...) Not enough lips to pronounce
of thy fleeting names, water (...)
W. Szymborska, Water
Water has accompanied us since the beginning of our existence and, as we all know, without it life is impossible. It conditions proper development, enables growth, quenches thirst and fires, purifies by combining its drops into streams of rain and soothes shattered nerves with its noise and gentleness. It also evokes fear as an uncontrollable force. Water creates emotions and becomes an inspiration for poets, painters, and artists in many fields. Each of us strives throughout life not to run out of water, because it is a guarantee of happiness, peace, and stability. Throughout history, water has been attributed with mystical significance. In the last episode of the series, let us trace some of the meanings that influence our perception of this element and help us appreciate more deeply the life-giving power of water.
Water is the fundamental element of the garden, giving life to plants. From the earliest times people have tried to capture it in decorative forms. It gushed in fountains, foamed in cascades, flowed in "water theaters". In addition to moving gushing waters, still, noble waters - mirrors - dazzled with their beauty. They were able to reflect the changing sky and rays of sunlight. There was no era in the history of gardens, which would not appreciate the pleasure of a boat tour accompanied by music or poetry. The water that carried the boats to the garden islands embodying an isolated land of happiness was the water of transformation and spiritual change. The presence of water was valued in all types of gardens and parks in every historical era. The excess or scarcity of water in a given space determined the scale and richness of the solutions employed. Often the share of natural water in historic gardens was significant. When the assumption made use of natural watercourses, it became the most durable and to a better degree survived throughout the history to our times.
We encourage you to watch and listen to the lecture of an expert - Mr. Łukasz Przybylak, landscape architect, Deputy Chairman of the European Route of Historic Gardens. Special guests: Mr. Robert Makłowicz as well as Radek Berent and Łukasz Marcinkowski will sum up the twelve episodes of our series.
